Ubud
Ubud is known as the spiritual heartland of Bali. Long revered for its temples and artistic heritage, the village has in recent years grown into a vibrant hub attracting expats, yogis and digital nomads. Once you explore beyond the busy centre of town jam packed with cafes, galleries, yoga studios and boutiques, you’ll be surrounded by rice fields, jungle and the lush beauty of the real Bali.
As always, it's best to leave early so we aren't rushing. If you don't have time for breakfast, we can stop at the morning markets on the way and pick up a snack.

The Barong is the mythical lion, a protector of Bali, and is involved in a popular dance in Bali. The dance originated from the Gianyar region, where Ubud is.
Within the Calon Arang, the dance drama in which the Barong appears, the Barong responds to Rangda's use of magic to control and kill her to restore balance. In traditional Barong dance performances, he is portrayed in his struggles against Rangda, a popular story in Balinese culture.
The Barong dances along the street and a priest throws holy water at it. The dance opens with two playful monkeys teasing the Barong in a peaceful environment.
