The dance originated from the Gianyar region, where Ubud is. Within the Calon Arang, the dance drama in which the Barong appears, the Barong responds to Rangda's use of magic to control and kill her to restore balance. In traditional Barong dance performances, he is portrayed in his struggles against Rangda, a popular story in Balinese culture. The Barong dances along the street and a priest throws holy water at it. The dance opens with two playful monkeys teasing the Barong in a peaceful environment.

Mas Village is a traditional villages in Bali and reknowned as an artistic community focusing on the art of wood carving. Mas is close to Ubud in the Gianyar Regency. One of the most famous maestros of Mas Village is Ida Bagus Tilem.

Ubud Monkey Forest is the sanctuary and natural habitat of the Balinese long tailed macaque. It is located at Padangtegal Ubud, Bali.
